Papago! GoSafe 110 'Trucker tested' Dash Cam from GearBest.com Recommended dash cam

The Papago! GoSafe 110 is a small, reliable dash  cam, that is easy to use.   I tested one in my tractor trailer for three and a half weeks, while traveling 9600 miles in the USA.
Video quality is good, day and night.
The GS110 has a capacitor, not a battery, which is preferred for a dash cam in daily use in a vehicle.
Is this a high end dash cam?  NO.
I wasn't expecting to like this cam when I was offered one for review, but I was pleasantly surprised.
It works, and works well, the video is decent, and it's reliable.
For most users, this cam will be sufficient if you are looking for a dash cam you can actually use, and count on for protection while driving.

No dash cam is 'set and forget'.
At the minimum,  you'll need to format the memory card at regular intervals, and also verify the camera is working normally, both by visual checks of the display, and occasional review of save video clips.

The GS110 has a small screen, which makes 'aiming' the camera easy, and verifying normal operation, also.

It is possible to view saved videos on this screen, but I usually don't do that with any dash cam, since it's much easier to do so via the laptop that is a few feet away.

The GS 110 has a 'G Force' sensor to automatically save video during an incident.
I don't use this function on most of my cams, but save them manually, if needed.

The GS 110 also works OK in 'motion' detection mode.
I've been using this mode for normal operation.
The camera will start recording with any movement nearby of a vehicle or person,
(Within the view of the lens) and when you start driving.

The video segments while in motion detection mode are around 2 minutes each.
'Normal' video segments are a default 5 minutes.
(No option to change this, other than going to motion detection, which works well)

It's possible to use motion detection for some protection in a parked vehicle, but make sure you have sufficient battery capacity in your vehicle.

(This won't work out well for you in a car you leave parked for days,  it may drain your car battery.  In a large truck with multiple batteries, you're OK)

Thinking about a dash cam?

The GS 110 is a nice, basic cam, that performs well, is modestly priced, and is easy to use.

Papago! GoSafe 110 'Trucker tested' Dash Cam

The Papago! GoSafe 110 is a good, basic dash cam, suitable for truckers.
I've been using one for a few weeks, and I'm happy with it.
Day and night video quality is good.
Currently, there is a coupon code at GearBest.com which drops the price to $69.99, US, with free shipping.      This is a good deal.     Don't buy the overpriced 'junk' cams you see for sale at truck stops.    This is better, and cheaper.

Use promotion code GS110 at checkout at GearBest.com to get
this price.

What do I like about this camera?

  • Good day and night video
  • It has a capacitor, not a battery.  This means longer life for the camera, and less problems
  • The menu system is pretty easy to use.  After some minor configuration, you won't need to use the menu, much.    The screen display is also easy to turn off, and on.
  • 'Motion Detection' mode works pretty well, coupled with better than average night video.
  • Card Format reminder option.   You really need to format your memory cards occasionally to extend the life of the card.    'In Camera' formatting is easy.
  • Price.  The current promotion price is a good deal, and you get a reliable, decent dash cam for a modest amount of  money.

The videos below are from the Papago! GoSafe 110 I'm currently using

The Papago!  GoSafe 110 works well in motion detection mode, which is  useful for protection when your truck or car is parked for hours at a time.   You get video coverage of your vehicle, without hours of video with no activity.

Papago! GoSafe 110 Motion detection samples (Parked tractor trailer)

I've been leaving the cam on in the truck overnight, while parked and in 'motion detector' mode.
The Papgo! GS110 easily triggers when another truck moves within the field of vision and by pedestrians.
The GS 110 appears to continue recording for about one minute after it is triggered by motion, meaning there is a moving object in the frame for ten seconds, the resulting file is around 1:10 minutes long.

Motion dection mode on a dashcam may be a solution for long term, unattended parking coverage. Most truckers do leave the truck parked, and unattended for a day or more. Vandalism, break ins, or damage from other vehicles is not unheard of. A cam file from a dashcam in this mode may give some clues to who was responsible, as long as they moved within the field of view of the camera.

SUV uses a shortcut to get around backup on I-70

The first segment of video is from an A118-C dashcam, the second from a Mobius, standard lens dash cams. Both are dashcams I recommend for truckers, inexpensive, and reliable.

Video from a Mobius standard lens dash/action cam.

People who take illegal 'shortcuts' like this person, cause accidents.

Of course, he probably felt he was too important to wait in line for the green light, or too smart.

A118C 'Wedge' Dashcam sample video

The A118C is a decent, budget priced Dashcam with good 'bang for the buck' features. Simple to use. Reliable. Good quality video. It does need to be 'semi' permanently mounted by two sided tape, but the camera unit removes and replaces easily on the mounting plate. (As opposed to using a suction cup mount) I've been using one in my tractor trailer for a few months. The Capacitor (C) version is the better choice for big truck use.

A118-C 1080p HD Dash Camera w/ Capacitor

This is a dashcam that looks promising to me. (Do I really need another one?)
A118 HD 1080p Car Dash Camera - $79.95
from: Spy Tec

The video is good, and it has some nice 'stealth' features. There is also an inexpensive GPS module available. This cam is better suited for a 'semi-permanent' installation, due to the use of sticky tape to mount it to the windshield. It's not impossible to move from car to car, but not as simple as using a suction cup mount. I do intend to try one of these out!
Check the details and reviews on this cam at SpyTec.

Using a mobius as a Dashcam, only? Try a Super Capacitor, or Hard Wire kit!

If you are using a Mobius as a dashcam, you are better off changing the internal battery with a 'Super Capacitor'. The OEM battery works fine for 'action cam' or occasional dashcam use, but the unit does get warm. A 'Super capacitor' is inexpensive, easy to install, and the way to go for dashcam use!

Super Capacitor For Mobius Action Camera - $8.95
from: Spy Tec

Want to see what a stock Mobius battery looks like after a year of use as a dashcam?

That's the OEM battery in the silver wrapper, and the new Super Capacitor to the right of it.
See how puffed out the OEM battery is?
Changing to  a Capacitor is easy, and takes maybe 5 minutes.  If you are going to use a Mobius as a dashcam, only, buy the Super Capacitor at the same time you buy your cam!
The Super Capacitor is not a battery.  You must have power connected to your Mobius for the camera to work.   That means, if you connect your power lead to a 'key on' electrical source, the mobius will only work when the ignition key is 'on'.
This is fine for dashcam use, and your cam runs cooler, and will last longer.
Make sure you adjust your parameters on the Mobius to allow the mobius to save the last file and shut down immediately when power is lost, or turned off, or you may lose your last file.

Thinking of a more permanent installation? Why not use a 'hard wire' kit? This will give you a much neater setup, more discrete, and get rid of most exposed wiring. You'll have to evaluate your vehicle to see if it will work for you. It's much easier if you have some sort of power source, perhaps in an overhead console, but it's still very possible to route the wiring around the edge of your windshield, and down to the dash area. The hard wire kits have enough wire to do this, and they will work with any cam that uses a micro USB, or even any electronic device that does. Want to make your GPS install look neater? Have you priced replacement cigarette lighter plug power cords for you GPS?

Make sure you use a power source that is 'off' when the key is off!

Fort McHenry tunnel tollbooths, Stupid trucker, caught on cam

Approaching tollbooths on I-95 is often crazy enough, without a stupid trucker doing a U-turn, actually, a 360, in front of you to get to a different toll lane!
Cars will cut you off at the last minute, trying to get to a quicker toll lane, and often it's kind of vague which lane you are lining up for. You need to be careful, there are impatient, and inattentive, idiots behind the wheel.
Take our friend in the red car hauler, who must have entered the wrong toll lane, decided the smartest thing to do was to completely turn around in the one way, oncoming traffic, to get to the correct lane.
Traffic was light, he was lucky, but I hope he was held at the toll gate until the police arrived.
What do you do when you realize you are in the wrong toll lane, like a lane for electronic payment methods you do not have? SIT THERE, and wait. A toll attendant from another booth, or the office, will walk over to you. Yes, they are usually not very happy to do this, but they will, and you probably will just pay your toll and go on your way.
